PSU Men Return from NorCal Tour a Better Team

The Penn State Men’s Team completed their tour of Northern California and returned to Happy The Penn State Men’s Team completed their tour of Northern California and returned to Happy Valley healthy and hardened after hard fought yet humbling matches against two of the very best collegiate teams in the country in St. Mary’s College and Cal Berkeley. The PSU teams, who were playing their first real matches of the spring season on break, knew fully the uphill climb they had playing two of the top 5 teams in the country, both of whom were in mid season form. But they embraced the challenges and the opportunity to accelerate their development.

The 43 man squad played 4 matches on the 9 day tour in addition to: some training sessions with St. Mary’s Head Coach Tim O’Brien and Super League club San Francisco Golden Gate, a trip to Muir Woods to see the redwoods and a day in San Francisco at famous Fisherman’s Wharf, which included a trip to Alcatraz for some.

“There was a lot packed into this tour, and the boys got a lot out of it” stated Assistant Coach and former PSU Player John “Hooker” Swart. “The matches were very tough, but the team got better each time they took the pitch, and the matches impacted everyone, which was the point of the trip.” This was evident in the final match of the tour when the B side showed a pace of play and aggressiveness on defense that they had not shown before in defeating Cal Maritime.

“Most important to me was that we got to see exactly what we are trying to become, and where we want to be as a rugby team, and we were able to make it through tour with no major injuries” commented Head Coach Don Ferrell. “You cannot replicate that environment in training, and we felt that this level of competition was critical to our preparation for the league season and hopefully beyond.”

Tour Ends with Lessons Learned
The Women's Team has returned from France with lessons learned to carry with them as they start their Spring Season.
